A Reddit login requirement will be tested in select international markets in the fourth quarter of 2026, chief executive Steve Huffman announced on Thursday, as shrinking referral traffic from Google search and rampant automated data scraping push the social forum to wall off its open web access.
Key points
- Reddit plans to test mandatory account logins in select markets outside the United States before deciding which sections of the site remain open to logged-out visitors.
- Weekly search referrals fell by more than one million visits on average in October as Google search prioritises AI overviews over traditional web links.
- Third-quarter revenue rose 53 per cent year-on-year to $895 million, but weak fourth-quarter forecasts pushed Reddit shares down more than 11 per cent in after-hours trading.
- Registered users and mobile app visitors generate more than 80 per cent of Reddit’s total revenue, supporting higher advertising rates and commercial data-licensing agreements.
Closing the front page to logged-out visitors
Reddit is preparing to abandon two decades of unhindered public access by forcing visitors to register accounts before reading discussions. Huffman confirmed the planned change alongside the release of Reddit’s third-quarter financial results, describing it as an essential operational adjustment to protect the platform’s content and commercial stability.
For twenty years, Reddit has functioned as an open archive of human advice, personal recommendations, and technical troubleshooting. Millions of people regularly append the site’s name to Google queries to bypass promotional articles and automated search engine spam. Under the new policy, reading those community threads without an active account will soon be restricted.
Reddit will begin testing the account requirement in select markets outside the US during the fourth quarter. The company has not set a formal date for a wider global rollout. Huffman explained that the business wants to study how mandatory logins influence community participation, visitor retention, and advertising metrics before establishing final boundaries between public and restricted content.
Writing in a post on Reddit’s site, Huffman acknowledged his personal reluctance to alter the platform’s open structure. He wrote that he had come to view the shift as “the right decision for our platform and the right decision for our business” in response to current internet realities.
Company executives stressed that mandatory accounts will not require members to sacrifice pseudonymity. Reddit does not intend to collect verified real-world identities, and the platform has rebuilt its mobile incognito mode so logged-in users can browse sensitive topics without tying searches to their personal histories.
Google AI disruption hits referral traffic
The primary catalyst behind the strategic shift is a sudden drop in visitors arriving through search engines. In the company’s quarterly shareholder letter, Huffman disclosed that logged-out web visits suffered substantial declines throughout the third quarter.
Google search has historically been one of Reddit’s largest growth engines. An earlier algorithm update intended to surface authentic forum discussions caused Reddit traffic to surge. That dynamic reversed this year as Google integrated direct answers and conversational summaries into main query results, mirroring shifts seen as Google AI Mode ads expand to 10 more countries.
Huffman told CNBC that search traffic during October dropped by “more than 1 million referrals on average per week” compared to historical baselines. Rather than sending users directly to forum threads, automated search summaries now extract answers on Google’s own pages, stripping publishers of external click-through traffic.
The company warned investors that if these search trends persist, total daily active users could decline by a low-double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter. A contraction of 10 to 12 per cent would reduce Reddit’s audience to roughly 115 million daily active users, eliminating months of expansion.
The problem of search engines indexing open chat channels and forums has created broad friction across the social web, comparable to how public Discord messages appear on Google and face unexpected scraping. Reddit concluded that preserving unfettered public access makes little strategic sense when search engines consume forum material without returning visitor traffic.
Earnings beat overshadowed by soft forecast
Reddit delivered strong financial numbers for the third quarter of 2026, beating Wall Street estimates across top and bottom lines before a conservative future outlook startled investors. The company reported adjusted earnings of $1.40 per share, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.35 per share.
Total revenue grew 53 per cent year-on-year to $895 million, exceeding consensus projections of $878 million. Net income rose 74 per cent to $283 million. The expansion ended an eight-quarter streak of revenue growth exceeding 60 per cent, confirming that top-line acceleration is beginning to moderate.
Despite the operational gains, Reddit shares fell more than 11 per cent in after-hours trading after management issued soft guidance for the final three months of the year. Reddit projected fourth-quarter revenue between $1.0 billion and $1.03 billion, missing analyst forecasts of $1.05 billion.
Audience growth figures also illustrated diverging regional trends. Global daily active unique users increased 12 per cent year-on-year to 130.3 million, missing expectations of 133.7 million. The total was flat compared to the second quarter.
In the United States, Reddit’s most profitable advertising market, daily active users dropped 2 per cent year-on-year to 50.7 million, down from 53.2 million in the second quarter. The result lagged behind the 53.5 million domestic users anticipated by analysts.
The economics of registered audiences
Even as audience growth slows, Reddit has become far more effective at generating revenue from the people who remain on the platform. Domestic average revenue per daily active user jumped 53 per cent year-on-year to $13.82. Globally, average revenue per user rose 36 per cent to $6.87, beating expectations of $6.50.
Registered users accessing the platform through native mobile applications account for more than 80 per cent of Reddit’s total monetization. Unregistered visitors arriving from search queries generate negligible ad revenue because they rarely view more than a single page and provide minimal contextual information to advertisers.
Advertising sales reached $847 million during the quarter, an increase of 54 per cent over the prior year. When users log in, Reddit captures behavioral signals that allow it to target advertisements based on community subscriptions and reading habits. The company is also deploying a personalized feed to surface recommended discussions and increase active participation like voting and commenting.
Beyond conventional advertising, the Reddit login requirement is built to defend proprietary forum discussions against unauthorized automated collection. Large language model developers frequently harvest forum archives to train conversational artificial intelligence systems.
Reddit has established official data-licensing agreements with OpenAI and Google to commercialise this access. Non-advertising revenue, which houses these data contracts, increased 35 per cent year-on-year to $48 million. Huffman noted that Reddit remains in negotiations with Google regarding the future of their data partnership, insisting the company will only sign terms that preserve long-term value.
Requiring authentication allows Reddit to block unauthorized scrapers from harvesting logged-out web pages, forcing AI companies to purchase structured data feeds through official channels or lose access to the site’s ongoing human discussions.
What happens next
Reddit will launch its initial login experiments in selected international markets before the end of 2026. Product teams plan to monitor user pushback, bounce rates, and account creation numbers to determine how much of the service should remain visible to casual web visitors.
The company will also continue testing its rebuilt incognito mobile experience, aiming to convince privacy-conscious readers that account creation will not compromise personal browsing privacy.
