Polestar 2 production has officially concluded in China after a six-year run, InsideEVs reported on 2 November 2026. The Swedish electric vehicle maker has retired the vehicle that established its brand worldwide, pausing the model line until a planned replacement model arrives in 2027.
Key points
- Polestar has officially ended manufacturing of the Polestar 2 electric vehicle after six years.
- Assembly took place in China, where the model anchored the company’s early volume deliveries.
- A successor vehicle is scheduled to debut in 2027 to take over the model line.
The end of a six-year build
The conclusion of assembly marks the retirement of Polestar’s first high-volume electric car. InsideEVs reported that the vehicle was “the car that put Polestar on the map” during its six years on assembly lines.
Polestar launched the model as an all-electric fastback designed to compete directly with mid-size premium saloons. Over its production cycle, the vehicle carried the commercial weight of the company as newer sport utility vehicles prepared for global release.
Manufacturing in China
Assembly of the Polestar 2 took place in China throughout its commercial life. Building the car in Chinese facilities gave the manufacturer direct access to established battery supply chains and high-volume production lines.
That manufacturing footprint allowed Polestar to export the electric car to key markets across Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific region. With assembly now stopped, the factory lines will retool for incoming vehicle architectures.
What happens in 2027?
The retirement of the car leaves a temporary gap in Polestar’s line-up for an entry-level premium saloon. InsideEVs reported that the vehicle’s story is not finished, with a designated successor scheduled to arrive in 2027.
Polestar has not published technical specifications or pricing for the upcoming 2027 model. The company will rely on its larger sport utility vehicle models until the new car reaches showrooms.
